//BLUF: RUSSIAN PRISON OVERRUN BY ISIS MILITANTS. CANADIAN RAILROAD LABOR STRIKE HALTED BY CANADIAN GOVERNMENT.//
-----BEGIN TEARLINE-----
-International Events-
Russia: Overnight, Islamist State (ISIS) militants conducted an assault at the IK-19 penal colony in Volgograd. ISIS militants occupied the facility for a few hours, executing at least three guards. AC: The militants made several varying demands, such as military equipment, money, and a helicopter, however Russian authorities were not willing to negotiate and retook the facility by force. All ISIS militants were either neutralized or arrested.
This attack comes a few days after Putin’s surprise visit to Chechnya, his first visit to the region in over a decade. This visit served to diplomatically cement the Chechen Republic’s role in Russia’s future, along with strengthening ties with Ramzan Kadyrov, the current head of the mostly Islamic republic.
Norway: Newly-released reporting reveals an act of sabotage that occurred at a critical military installation earlier this year. Local Norwegian media reports that a communications cable at Evenes Air Station was deliberately cut back in April. The investigation of this incident is currently ongoing.
-HomeFront-
Colorado: This morning two trains collided near Boulder, destroying a rail bridge and causing a minor fuel leak.
Canada: Yesterday afternoon the Canadian government intervened to halt the railroad lockout, less than a day after it started. However, even as rail operations are resuming normally, logistical delays are still expected for some cargo.
-----END TEARLINE-----
Analyst Comments: Critical cargo or any freight cars carrying HAZMAT were halted about a week before the labor strike, so as to not result in this important cargo being stuck on random sidings throughout Canada. As such, even a labor strike of one day has caused backlogs that might take several weeks to return to normal.
