Genesis 37:1-36 tells the beginning of the story of Joseph, one of the sons of Jacob (also called Israel). The chapter is divided into several key events:

Joseph's Dreams: Joseph, the 17-year-old favorite son of Jacob, is given a special robe by his father, signifying his favored status. This favoritism causes tension between Joseph and his brothers. Joseph then shares two dreams with his brothers. In the first dream, he and his brothers are binding sheaves of grain in the field, and his sheaf stands upright while theirs bow down to it. In the second dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bow down to him. These dreams suggest that Joseph will one day have authority over his family, further increasing his brothers' jealousy and hatred.

The Plot Against Joseph: Joseph's brothers, already resentful, plot to kill him when he comes to check on them while they are tending their father’s flocks. Reuben, the eldest brother, persuades them not to kill Joseph but to throw him into a pit instead, intending to rescue him later. However, when Joseph arrives, the brothers strip him of his robe and throw him into an empty pit.

Joseph Sold into Slavery: While Reuben is away, Judah suggests selling Joseph to a passing caravan of Ishmaelite traders instead of killing him. The brothers agree and sell Joseph for twenty pieces of silver. When Reuben returns and finds Joseph gone, he is distraught, but the brothers deceive their father by dipping Joseph’s robe in goat’s blood and showing it to Jacob, who believes Joseph has been killed by a wild animal. Jacob mourns deeply for his son.

Joseph's Fate: Meanwhile, the traders take Joseph to Egypt, where he is sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard. This marks the beginning of Joseph's journey in Egypt, where he will eventually rise to a position of great power.

This chapter sets the stage for the unfolding story of Joseph’s trials and triumphs in Egypt, as well as the eventual reconciliation with his family.
