BMW's S55 engine is an outlier within its engine family. The mechanical engine water pump and separate intercooler water pump take up extra space, making replacing your engine belts much more of a hassle. The process involves draining the coolant and removing radiator fans, so it's not for the faint of heart.

The belts drive the engine's water pump, the AC compressor, and the alternator. Each provides a vital service that would hamper the car's ability to function properly if no longer driven. The S55's belts should see replacement at 50,000 miles; more than that and you run the risk of one snapping. The tensioners will also wear, and if the bearings in their rollers seize, they can damage the belt.

In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIYer, replaces the accessory drive belt and water pump belt on a BMW F82 M4.
