If you don't want to breathe the dirt and debris from your HVAC system, we'd advise replacing your cabin air filter. It acts as a barrier for the air coming out of the heater but will eventually need replacing after thousands of miles of contaminants are kept out of the cabin. Like most models, the Mercedes Sprinter cabin air filters are a snap to replace.

When full of debris, the activated charcoal can wear out, causing a funky mildew or mold-like smell to come out of the vents. To prevent that, replace the dirty cabin air filter every 30,000 miles. However, that's situational, so if you live in an environment with lots of dust, moisture, pollen, or other contaminants, it's better to check the filter's condition every few oil changes.

In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er, replaces the cabin air filter on a W906 Mercedes Sprinter van.
