Mérida is located less than 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the northeastern part of the state of Yucatán. It borders to the east with Quintana Roo, to the west with Campeche and to the north with the Gulf of Mexico. Yucatán has a very flat topography and is located very close to sea level.

The Parque Zoológico del Centenario, known colloquially as El Centenario, is the most important zoo in the city of Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. It is located to the west of said city, on Avenida de los Itzaes and streets 59, 84 and 65. It was founded in 1910, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the independence of Mexico, from which its name derives. It was created with the purpose that the city will have a recreational park. It originally functioned as a botanical garden.
