Clashes as ultra-Orthodox Jews protest draft

Ultra-Orthodox Jews have staged a protest outside the IDF recruitment office in Jerusalem, leading to arrests and clashes with officers. A recent Supreme Court ruling has meant that ultra-Orthodox Jews can now be drafted into the Israeli army, with many expected to attend the recruitment office on Wednesday.

Protesters were heard shouting ‘we will die and not enlist,’ and ‘to prison and not to the army,’ while others staged sit-ins and blocked roads, building makeshift barricades.

Mounted officers arrived and attempted to break up the roadblocks, leading to violent scuffles. Officers were seen pushing and hitting the protesters, and dragging several people away.
