Hanging Around: Dog Swings On Rope Swing

Some dogs are quite tenacious and are not into giving up once they’ve got their jaws on something. Which is how we get videos of moments like this dog just hanging around from a rope swing in his owner’s backyard. We could not quite tell what breed of dog this is but we are going to go out on a limb here and guess that he is either a boxer or a pit bull. If you have a better idea let us know.

We will take a few sentences to discuss how pit bulls came to be though. For example, we did know that the breed was created by breeding bulldogs and terriers together to combine the agility of terriers and the strength of bulldogs. They were initially used in bull and bear-baiting, but those activities were banned in 1835 as part of a series of animal welfare laws. However, it did lead to the creation of dog fighting which is partially why pit bulls have the reputation that they do. However, in the early 20th century, pit bulls were used as catch dogs.

Catch dogs are dogs that used to hunt or herd semi-wild cattle and hogs. That said, pit bulls have been used as guard and police dogs in the United States. Did you know that a number of different breeds are fall under the pit bull umbrella. These include Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers as well as Staffordshire Terriers. That was news to us when we looked it up. While pit bulls have been bred for aggression there is a trend of breeders trying to breed friendliness back into pit bulls. These dogs have a very strange and ever-changing reputation!
