The Shein Simulation: Are We Living in Its AI Fashion Matrix?

Shein, the fast fashion giant, is facing yet another major controversy, adding to its long list of scandals. From exploiting workers and violating labor laws to stealing designs and selling potentially toxic clothing, Shein’s unethical practices are finally being exposed. But this time, the truth is even worse than we imagined.

A recent documentary, Untold: Inside the Shein Machine, provides the first undercover look into Shein’s supply chain. The investigation reveals horrifying conditions inside its factories, where workers earn as little as $20 per week and work up to 18-hour shifts with almost no breaks. Employees are paid per garment instead of per hour, meaning they are forced to push themselves to extreme limits just to survive. Some even wash their hair during lunch breaks because they have no time outside of work. Shockingly, many Shein factory workers only get one day off per month.

Shein claims to follow Chinese labor laws, but the documentary proves otherwise. The company’s own 2021 sustainability and social impact report found that 66% of its suppliers violated Shein’s own code of conduct. Independent reports show the situation is even worse, with factories failing fire safety regulations and workers being trapped in dangerous conditions. A Swiss watchdog group, Public Eye, reported that Shein factories lack emergency exits, making them potential death traps in case of a fire. This brings chilling reminders of past factory tragedies, such as the 2015 Kentex Manufacturing fire in the Philippines, where 72 workers lost their lives due to blocked exits and unsafe conditions.

And this is just the beginning. Shein has also been accused of stealing designs from independent artists using AI-powered data scraping. A class-action lawsuit in New York alleges that Shein monitors social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to track trending designs. Once a design starts gaining traction, Shein’s AI system allegedly steals it, mass-produces it within hours, and sells it at a fraction of the price. This practice has devastated small creators, many of whom don’t even realize their work has been copied until it’s too late.

In July 2023, three graphic designers in China sued Shein for copyright infringement, arguing that the company’s algorithmic design theft was so systematic that it could be considered organized crime. If proven true, this could have serious legal consequences for the company, adding to the growing number of lawsuits it already faces.

But Shein’s legal troubles don’t stop there. Its biggest competitor, Temu, has accused Shein of using illegal tactics to dominate the market. Temu’s lawsuit claims that Shein forces suppliers to sign loyalty oaths, preventing them from working with Temu. Those who break this agreement allegedly face severe financial penalties, intimidation, and even physical imprisonment. The lawsuit also states that Shein has seized suppliers' devices to steal Temu’s trade secrets, further escalating the rivalry between the two fast-fashion giants.

Shein also continues to market itself as an eco-friendly company, but there’s no real proof of sustainability. The company claims to use recycled materials and reduce hazardous chemicals, yet investigations have found no transparency in its supply chain. Tests on Shein’s clothing have even revealed unsafe levels of toxic chemicals, raising concerns about the potential health risks of wearing their garments.

Despite mounting evidence against Shein, the company remains the world’s largest and fastest-growing fashion retailer. Its aggressive business model, low prices, and social media dominance continue to attract millions of shoppers daily. Even with multiple scandals, Shein uploads over 10,000 new items to its app every single day, fueling the cycle of fast fashion waste, worker exploitation, and environmental damage.

So the question remains—will Shein ever be held accountable for its unethical practices? Or will consumers continue to support a brand built on stolen designs, sweatshop labor, and environmental destruction?
