The TOS-2 ‘Tosochka’ is Russia’s latest heavy thermobaric rocket system, and is starting to see use by Russian servicemen. Soldiers from the ‘Center’ group used the TOS-2 to destroy a stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Avdeevka area, with its devastating array of thermobaric missiles. The TOS-2 crew, after receiving orders, maneuvered to their firing position and launched a salvo of thermobaric rockets from a distance of approximately 20 kilometers. The strike, which was guided and adjusted in real-time by UAVs, effectively targeted Ukrainian personnel and fortifications.

The TOS-2 ‘Tosochka’ improves and modernizes the TOS-1A ‘Solntsepek’ in several ways. Instead of tracks, the TOS-2 now moves on a wheelbase based on the ‘Ural’ cross country vehicle, improving mobility, and therefore survivability. Electronic protection systems are more advanced too, as is its integration with drone guidance. It’s considerably more lightweight too, at only 20 tons, compared to 40 tons of the TOS-1A. The missiles too are improved: despite only carrying 18 as opposed to 24, the Tosochka’s missiles can burn an area of six hectares, up from four, and have triple the range.
