Episode 2: ATSF Motive Power Development - Number 1, the Cyrus K. Holiday and Uncle Dick
In this video I begin telling the story of locomotive development on the Santa Fe Railroad starting with the 4-4-0 American steam locomotive in 1869.
The 4-4-0's had high drivers and where not suited well for the steep grades of Raton Pass that was acquired by the Santa Fe in 1878. A much more powerful and efficient locomotive would be needed to get a growing nation's freight over Raton and on to California.
This video series is dedicated to how motive power was developed and perfected by the Santa Fe Railway's Mechanical Engineering Department who produced the finest steam locomotives ever built and then they paved the way for diesel locomotive development staring in the 1930's.
We will cover the entire story from 1869 to 1994, which was the last full year of operation of the Santa Fe Railway before the merger with Burlington Northern in 1995.
