The San Marcos Police Department released police body camera footage, and nearby surveillance footage, showing the moments that led up to the fatal shooting of 22-year-old, Malachi Williams, in April.
It was April 11 when SMPD responded to a call at a gas station after two people reported they were being followed by Williams, who was armed with knives.
In the body-cam footage, you can see police arrive at the gas station and tell Williams several times, "Put your hands behind your back."
Williams asks officers why, then asks, "Are you gonna shoot me?"
Moments later, Williams takes off on foot and runs towards a nearby H-E-B.
Then, an officer opened fire and fatally shot him.
"I was worried that the suspect was going to harm a civilian," said SMPD Chief, Stan Standridge, who spoke on behalf of the officer who fired the deadly shots.
In the body-cam footage, it shows that an officer shot Williams in the back-- police allege, he was armed and may have been a threat to the public.
Still speaking on behalf of the officer involved, Standridge said, "I was concerned for the safety of the citizens in the parking lot and the grocery store due to the suspect actively running towards that direction with 2 large knives still in his hands."
SMPD released the footage to the Williams family Friday morning; Williams's grandfather, Wayne Miller, criticized officers for not rendering aid to Williams after shots were fired.
Miller said Williams' death has been a devastating loss and an example of systemic injustice.
"Somebody needs to go to trial," said Miller.
On Wednesday, a Hays County Grand Jury was presented with the body cam and surveillance footage; they ultimately decided to clear the officer involved of wrongdoing in Williams' death.
"What I really want is justice for Malachi," said Miller.
The Williams family said they are considering pursuing a civil case against the officer involved.
