Giant bonfires light up Kyoto's mountains marking Daimonji Festival

The annual Daimonji Festival in Kyoto was celebrated as the Daimonji Gozan Okuribi lit up the mountains with five huge blazing fires, creating an unforgettable site. During the week-long celebration, it is believed that the spirits of the deceased ancestors return to their living relatives. The Daimonji festival marks the end of this visit, with the ceremonial fires guiding the spirits back to heavens.
