Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the roof of the building that contains priceless works by Monet, Cezanne and Van Gogh. Two of the Brigade’s 32m ladders have been sent to the scene to support firefighting operations," the Fire Brigade Spokesperson said. Traffic in the surrounding area is expected to be impacted by the fire. The Somerset House has been closed to the public. The building was reconstructed nearly 250 years ago after the original Somerset House was demolished after being neglected.
