Encouragement Encouraged!

Last week we talked about NAYSAYERS. This week we talked about encouragers and encouragement.

encourage - The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language
1. To inspire with hope, courage, or confidence.
2. To give support to; foster.
3. To stimulate; spur.

encourage
1. a: to inspire with courage, spirit, or hope : hearten
b: to attempt to persuade : urge
2. to spur on : stimulate
3. to give help or patronage to : foster

“The word encouragement used in this verse is from the Greek word parakletos that can mean to exhort, come alongside of, comfort, or encourage. The Holy Spirit is referred to as our Paraclete in John 14:16 as One who comes alongside the believer to comfort and help in times of need.”

Acts 4:31 ESV
And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Luke 4:14-15
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region. He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone.

We have 3 SOURCES of Encouragement
1. Other people who have this gift can encourage us
Romans 12:8
ESV
the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

NIV
if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

2. Holy Spirit, Jesus, and Abba always are ready to encourage us!

John 14:16 NIV
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever”

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever...

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.”

Romans 8:31 NIV
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with GREATERS STRICTNESS.

3. We can encourage OURSELVES since we CHOOSE what we FOCUS on!
David encouraged himself in Scripture:
1 Samuel 30:1-6 KJV
And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;
2 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
3 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.
4 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
5 And David's two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD.

HOW to Encourage Yourself in The Lord:
1. Read about someone in the Bible whose circumstances seem similar to yours

2. Declare things that are not as though they were Romans 4:17 NKJV (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did...

3. Pray (praying is 2-ways: Speak/Listen)

4. 2-Way Journaling (ask God important questions on your mind and heart)

5. Connect with God in the way that is good for you: nature, exercise, creativity, etc.

6. Make a list of things you're GRATEFUL for!
