Alaska officer kills 16-year-old girl in sixth local police shooting since May

Anchorage police fatally shot 16-year-old Easter Leafa, who was holding a knife, marking the fourth deadly officer-involved shooting in the city since mid-May.

Leafa had recently moved to Anchorage from American Samoa for better opportunities. Police responded to a family disturbance where Leafa allegedly threatened her sister with a knife.

Officers said they gave multiple commands before one fired lethal rounds and another used a less-lethal projectile.

Leafa’s family disputes the police account, claiming she was shot after a slight movement.

The incident, captured on body cameras, is under investigation, with the officer’s name to be released after 72 hours, The Guardian has reported.
