Johann Sebastian Bach - Concerto for 3 Harpsichords in D minor, BWV 1063
Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for 3 Harpsichords in D minor, BWV 1063, is a remarkable example of the Baroque era's rich musical tapestry. This concerto, composed around 1730, showcases Bach's masterful ability to blend intricate counterpoint with engaging melodies across three harpsichords, accompanied by a string orchestra and continuo. The concerto is structured in three movements: Allegro, Alla Siciliana, and Allegro, each displaying unique characteristics and a distinct dialogue between the harpsichords.
The opening Allegro is dynamic and vigorous, featuring lively exchanges between the three soloists. The interplay is sophisticated, with each harpsichordist given moments to shine, weaving through themes and variations.
The second movement, Alla Siciliana, is a lyrical and flowing piece. It has a dance-like quality.
The final Allegro reintroduces the energetic and spirited character of the first movement, concluding the concerto with a compelling and robust dialogue among the harpsichords.
BWV 1063 is one of several concertos Bach composed for multiple harpsichords, reflecting his experimentation and innovation within the concerto grosso form.
While concertos for solo instruments or a pair of instruments were common, a concerto featuring three harpsichords was highly unusual, highlighting Bach's daring and inventive spirit.
During Bach's time, the harpsichords would often have been played by Bach himself and his talented sons, showcasing their virtuosic skills and familial collaboration.
It is believed that this concerto may have been adapted from an earlier concerto for three violins, illustrating Bach's practice of reworking his compositions for different instrumental configurations.
Like much of Bach's work, the Concerto for 3 Harpsichords fell into obscurity after his death and was revived in the 19th century, thanks to the Bach revival led by composers like Felix Mendelssohn.
