Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was a German Lutheran Pastor who became a vocal opponent of the rise of Nazism in Germany. He was arrested by the Gestapo and executed in a concentration camp.

Bonhoeffer was asked in 1943 how it was possible for the Church to sit back and let Hitler seize absolute power. His firm answer: "It was the teaching of cheap grace."
