Sept. 16, 1964 - In Vancouver today, President Johnson pledged that the United States always will defend freedom but will “spare no effort to achieve lasting peace.”
In joint ceremonies at the peace arch, Johnson said the first pillar of U.S.-Canadian friendship is peace.
The other pillars, Johnson said, are freedom, respect, and cooperation.
Under the Columbia River treaty, Canada will build three storage dams on the river, the U.S. will construct the Libby power and storage dam on the Kootenai River, a Columbia tributary, in Montana.
