Driving Into A Mexican Border Town For Supplies

In this episode we are going to answer the question of whether or not it's worth driving into a Mexican border town for supplies.

Hello and welcome back! In May of 2022 we sold our home in Denver and most everything we own to move onto our 36 acre homestead property in Cochise County Arizona. Follow along as we build our hyperadobe homestead from scratch!

YES, we definitely think it's worth driving over the Mexican border to get supplies. We brought our utility trailer with us to bring back the tank and if you are bringing a utility trailer, you'll need to make sure you have your registration and title to prove ownership, otherwise they will not let you into Mexico with it! Also, if you carry guns of any kind, DO NOT attempt to bring them or any ammunition over the border, they can be seized and you can put into a Mexican jail which nobody wants!

As for bringing things back into the U.S., you'll need to double check what the current list is. As of the date of this video (August 2024), we could not bring back live plants, pork sausage, or construction wood, but these things can change, so be sure and check that!

We got our tank for $950 U.S. Dollars when here in the U.S. it would have cost us around $2500, so yeah, definitely worth it!

A lot of you are curious about if the Cartel messes with you as a U.S. Citizen and we had no trouble at all. Now, if you are doing shady things or traveling through border towns at night, that might not hold true. Don't travel through border towns at night and it's advisable to go with a group of 2 or more for safety reasons. We've heard from locals that the Cartel is not interested in us for the most part. Of course, there are always exceptions to that, so be cautious!

Not everyone in Mexican Customs or in the stores/shops/restaurants in Mexico speaks English, so unless you are fluent in Spanish, bring a translator (you can download free apps onto your cell phone, but check with your cell service provider to make sure you'll have coverage in Mexico).

If you are driving further than a border town, you will need to get Mexican car insurance. We were told it was around $100 for a whole year of it. Also, it's a good idea to check with your own auto insurance company to see if they will cover any accidents while visiting Mexico.
