Located 20 minutes southwest of Bern in the hamlet of Räsch, Magdalena Hermitage is a fascinating cave etched out of the stone. First mentioned in 1448, it is unknown exactly who first started carving the cave or when.
Over the centuries, it has been used by anchorites as well as lay hermits. The last inhabitant of the cave was a German hermit by the name of Ernst Stengele. Stengele ultimately died in 1927.
It is currently under the protection of the Düdingen-Guin parish and welcomes visitors.
