Meet the Io moth. The Io moth is the largest moth in North America. Don't worry, it doesn't need the insides of your closet. In fact, these moths do not have a mouthpart and cannot eat. Their main goal is to find a mate and disappear within two weeks. In the caterpillar stage, they feed on leaves and accumulate nutrients. There are not many of them, so the trees hardly suffer from them. The wingspan of these fluffy creatures can reach 18 centimeters. Their bright coloration serves to deter predators. Adult moths are nocturnal and are attracted to light, which can lead them to sources of artificial lighting near human homes. Despite their impressive size, they are completely safe for humans.
