Signs and Symptoms
Fatty liver disease often doesn't cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages. However, as it progresses, you might experience:
1. Fatigue: A general feeling of tiredness or weakness.
2. Abdominal Discomfort: Pain or discomfort in the upper right side of the abdomen, where the liver is located.
3. Weight Loss: Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of advancing liver disease.

6. Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes, indicating severe liver damage.

8. Itchy Skin: Chronic itching can be a symptom of liver dysfunction.
Diagnosis
If you exhibit these symptoms, your doctor may perform the following tests to diagnose fatty liver disease:
- Blood Tests: To check liver enzyme levels.
- Imaging Tests: Ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to visualize fat accumulation in the liver.
- Liver Biopsy: In some cases, a small sample of liver tissue is examined for fat deposits and inflammation.
Management and Treatment
While there’s no specific medication for fatty liver disease, lifestyle changes can significantly improve liver health and reduce fat buildup:
1. Weight Loss: Losing just 5-10% of your body weight can reduce liver fat and inflammation.
2. Healthy Diet:
- Increase Fruits and Vegetables
- Choose Whole Grains
- Lean Proteins: Include fish, chicken, beans, and legumes.
- Avoid Sugary Foods and Drinks
- Limit Saturated Fats: Found in red meat, full-fat dairy, and fried foods.
3. Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Activities like walking, cycling, and swimming are great options.
4. Control Diabetes: Keep blood sugar levels within target ranges through diet, exercise, and medications if needed.
5. Lower Cholesterol: Manage cholesterol and triglyceride levels with a heart-healthy diet, exercise, and medications if prescribed.
6. Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can exacerbate liver damage, especially if you have alcoholic fatty liver disease.
7. Medications: In some cases, doctors may prescribe medications to treat associated conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol.
