An open-source, free packet analyzer is called Wireshark. It is employed in analysis, teaching, software development, and network communication protocol troubleshooting. Due to trademark difficulties, the project was renamed Wireshark in May 2006 from its original name, Ethereal.

Wireshark is a cross-platform program that operates on Linux, macOS, BSD, Solaris, and a few other Unix-like operating systems in addition to Microsoft Windows. It uses the Qt widget toolkit in current releases to construct its user interface and uses pcap to capture packets. Additionally, there is TShark, a terminal-based (non-GUI) version. The GNU General Public License, version 2 or any later version, governs the use of Wireshark and the additional programs it is bundled with, including TShark.
