Signs of revelation, preservation of revelation

In Islam, revelation refers to the divine messages and guidance communicated by God to His prophets. The primary signs of revelation in Islamic tradition are associated with the experiences of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during the period of receiving the Quran, the holy book of Islam. The revelation process, which began when Muhammad was around 40 years old, took place over a span of approximately 23 years.

The signs of revelation as experienced by the Prophet Muhammad included:

Angel Gabriel (Jibreel): The Angel Gabriel played a pivotal role in delivering the revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. The initial encounter in the Cave of Hira, where Gabriel instructed Muhammad to recite, marked the beginning of the revelation process.

Revelatory Experiences: Muhammad would experience various physical and spiritual sensations when receiving revelation. Sometimes these experiences would cause perspiration or visible signs of strain on his face, indicating that he was receiving divine communication.

Regarding the preservation of revelation, the Quran itself is considered the primary and unaltered scripture revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Islamic tradition strongly emphasizes the preservation of the Quran in its original form, both orally and textually:

Oral Transmission (Hifz): The Quran has been orally transmitted from generation to generation since the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Memorization of the entire Quran is highly encouraged and esteemed within the Muslim community, ensuring its preservation through committed memorizers known as Hafiz.

Written Compilation: During the Prophet's lifetime, scribes would immediately write down the revealed verses under Muhammad's guidance. After his death, the complete Quran was compiled into a single book during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, Muhammad's close companion, ensuring its preservation in written form.

Protection from Alteration: Muslims believe that the Quran is divinely protected (Tawatur) from any alterations or distortions, as God Himself has guaranteed its preservation. This assurance is believed to prevent any human tampering with the original text of the Quran.

Additionally, Hadith, the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad, were also preserved through rigorous oral transmission and written compilation by scholars, ensuring the preservation of the Prophet's teachings and practices alongside the Quran.
