Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, the tube connecting your mouth and stomach. This backward flow can irritate the lining of the esophagus and lead to symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, and chest discomfort. Over time, chronic acid reflux can cause inflammation, ulcers, or damage to the esophagus. If severe, it may lead to conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
