Safe Mechanical Lifting is one of the nine Life Saving Rules. Plan lifting operations and control the area: 🔺 I confirm that the equipment and load have been inspected and are fit for purpose. 🔺 I only operate equipment that I am qualified to use. 🔺 I establish and obey barriers and exclusion zones.
What are the safety precautions for lifting?
Keep loads as close to the body as possible and do not twist while lifting, carrying or setting down a load. Nose, shoulders, hips and toes should all be facing the same direction. Minimize reaching. As a general rule, bend at the knees, not the hips.
Hazards & Controls
Inspect your lift daily before operating. ...
Wear the proper personal protective equipment. ...
Never allow unauthorized or untrained persons to operate the lift or be in the shop area while operating the lift.
Make sure the area is clear of people, tools, and equipment when lowering a vehicle
Keep the vertical distance of lifts between mid-thigh and shoulder height. Do not start a lift below mid-thigh height nor end the lift above shoulder height. Lifting from below waist height puts stress on legs, knees, and back. Lifting above shoulder height puts stress on the upper back, shoulders, and arms.
