JUST IN: The 17-year-old student who brutally beat a teacher's aide was sentenced to five years in state prison followed by 15 years of probation.

"They are punishing that he is Black, they are punishing that he is large and they are punishing his disability," Lena Depa said after the hearing.

Brendan Depa was 17 when he brutally attacked Joan Naydich, a paraprofessional, at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, FL, on February 21, 2023

Circuit Judge Terence Perkins said Depa showed no remorse and noted the violence of the attack and his violent history.

Everyone has seen the video, Perkins said. “It captures the senseless, extreme violence in a very troubling way”

Depa will receive credit for approximately 17.5 months served in jail.
