Former President Barack Obama reportedly led an effort among top Democrats to remove President Joe Biden from office, even considering the use of the 25th Amendment. Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh revealed this, citing multiple sources, including a senior Washington official who described a White House in disarray.

According to Hersh, Obama contacted Biden three days after the 81-year-old president suffered a stroke in Las Vegas on July 17. Law enforcement sources confirmed Biden was taken to a Nevada hospital but was later cleared to return to Delaware. On July 20, Obama reportedly informed Biden that he had Vice President Kamala Harris's backing to invoke the 25th Amendment, due to Biden’s inability to fulfill his duties. This came after Biden's poor performance during a June 27 debate, which highlighted concerns about his mental state. Despite the pressure, Biden refused to step down, leading to Obama’s warning.

Hersh noted that this move had the support of other key Democratic leaders, including Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Hakeem Jeffries. However, Obama did not plan to immediately endorse Harris as Biden’s successor. Instead, he favored a primary-like process to select a new nominee, aiming to maintain influence over the election. Hersh described this as a "coup."

The situation escalated when Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race on July 21 and endorsed Harris as his replacement. This move, described as a defiant act against Obama, was not well-received by the former president, who made no mention of Harris in his subsequent statement.

Reports from the New York Post suggest Obama does not believe Harris can defeat former President Donald Trump and would prefer U.S. Senator Mark Kelly as a candidate. Hersh reported that if Harris’s poll numbers did not improve, other options, including an open convention, would be considered, with Democratic leaders expecting Harris to prove herself as the nominee.

This uncertainty led to what was described as a "weird and seemingly thrown together" endorsement of Harris by the Obama couple on July 26. POLITICO reported that Obama’s delay was intentional, as he did not want to interfere while the party was deciding its nomination process, which aligns with Hersh's account of Obama’s preference for an open convention.
