The King David Hotel bombing, which transpired on July 22, 1946, was a devastating act of violence perpetrated by the Irgun, a radical Zionist organization under the leadership of Menachem Begin, a future Prime Minister of Israel. This attack was targeted at the British Mandate government of Palestine and its armed forces.

The Irgun operatives, disguised as 'Arabs' and the Hotel's Sudanese waiters, infiltrated the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, a part of which was serving as the base for the Mandate Secretariat, the British military headquarters, and a branch of the police Criminal Investigation Division. They planted a bomb within the hotel's basement, leading to the catastrophic collapse of the hotel's southern wing's south-western corner. The resulting fatalities amounted to 91, including 28 British, 41 Arab, 17 Jewish, and 5 others. In addition, approximately 45 people sustained injuries. The casualties were not only confined to the hotel but also extended to the adjacent buildings and the road outside.

This attack on the King David Hotel was the deadliest in the history of the British Mandate and is often recognized as a significant factor influencing the British decision to relinquish the Mandate. If classified as a terrorist act, it was the most heinous and deadly of its kind globally.

In response to the attack, Prime Minister Clement Attlee addressed the House of Commons, expressing his horror at the "brutal and murderous crime" and condemning the "insane act of terrorism" that led to the loss of 93 lives. He also revealed that the attackers were identified as Jews, who had used a bomb in the street as a diversionary tactic before infiltrating the hotel with milk cans filled with explosives.

Initially, the Irgun claimed responsibility for the attack, blaming the British for the loss of life due to their failure to respond to the warning. However, a year later, they issued a new statement, asserting that they were acting under the instructions of "a letter from the headquarters of the United Resistance, demanding that we carry out an attack on the British at the King David Hotel as soon as possible." In July 2006, a 60th anniversary celebration of the bombing was organized by the Menachem Begin Centre, attended by Israelis including former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former members of Irgun. However, the British Ambassador in Tel Aviv and the Consul-General in Jerusalem objected, arguing that the commemoration of a terrorist act leading to the loss of many lives was not appropriate. They also protested against an Israeli plaque that suggested people died because the British ignored warning calls, stating it was false and "did not absolve those who planted the bomb." The plaque read, "For reasons known only to the British, the hotel was not evacuated." Consequently, city officials agreed to modify the plaque's wording.
