Mother City Pucker: Why our rink is called THE ICE STATION.

Hey there, folks! Mother City Pucker here, ready to give you the lowdown on one of Cape Town's coolest spots – our famous Ice Station, home to all things ice sports in our beautiful city.
Now, you might be wondering why it's called the Ice Station. Well, it’s not just because it's chilly inside! The building was designed to reflect the old original Central Station of Cape Town. Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane:
The first railway station in Cape Town was a simple wooden structure built back in 1861, located near what is now the Golden Acre shopping centre. It was small and humble, just like the early days of our railways. But as things grew, so did the station.
By 1875, under Prime Minister John Molteno, a grand Victorian stone complex was constructed at the bottom of Adderley Street to serve the expanding railway network. This central station was big enough for the growing number of train platforms and housed the headquarters of the Cape Government Railways. It got even bigger with additional enlargements over the years.
Fast forward to today, and when you visit our Ice Station, you get a glimpse of what that old Victorian central station looked like. The developers of the Grandwest Casino and Entertainment Complex chose old Cape heritage architectural landmarks as their theme, and our rink is a beautiful nod to that history.
Inside, you'll see the stunning iron arches, Roman-style archways, upper VIP levels, and even a replica of the old station clock right in the center. It’s like skating in a piece of history – but without worrying about missing your train!
