Operation HighJump, officially titled The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, 1946–1947, was a United States Navy operation organized by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Conducted from August 1946 to February 1947, it was one of the largest Antarctic expeditions ever assembled, involving 4,700 men, 13 ships, and 33 aircraft. The primary objectives of Operation HighJump included establishing the Antarctic research base Little America IV, training personnel, testing equipment in frigid conditions, and extending the United States' sovereignty over as much of Antarctica as possible.
The operation also aimed to study the feasibility of maintaining bases in the Antarctic and to expand the knowledge of hydrographic, geographic, geological, meteorological, and electromagnetic propagation conditions in the area. Despite some mishaps, including aircraft losses and severe weather challenges, Operation HighJump provided significant insights into the Antarctic environment and laid the groundwork for future scientific exploration and geopolitical interest in the region.
