Wade-Giles romanization of Sunzi The Chinese classic Bingfa, commonly known as The Art of Battle, is credited to Sun-tzu, also known as Sun Tzu, personal name Sun Wu, who is thought to have lived in the fifth century BC. This work is the earliest known book on war and military science.

“The Art of War” is traditionally attributed to Sunzi, a military strategist and general who served the state of Wu near the end of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), but it is more likely to have been written early in the Warring States period (475-221 BC), when China was split into six or seven states that frequently went to war with one another in their struggles for supremacy.

The Art of War is a methodical manual on strategy and tactics for leaders and commanders. The book explores different movements and how terrain affects how fights turn out. It emphasizes how crucial exact knowledge of the enemy's forces, deployments, and movements is.

The axiom "Know the opponent and know yourself, and you may fight a hundred battles without fear of defeat" succinctly captures this. It also highlights the use of adaptable methods and tactics and the unpredictable nature of combat.

Some modern strategists were strongly affected by the book's emphasis on the close connection between political considerations and military strategy. Many of the strategies that Mao Zedong and the Chinese communists used to combat the Japanese and later the Chinese Nationalists were taken from The Art of War.
