Bangladesh: PM Sheikh Hasina Resigns & Flees for India in helicopter
Mass rallies and violence have erupted once again across Bangladesh. The violence has killed at least 24 people. Bangladesh police have ordered a nationwide curfew and access to mobile internet has been curbed. The restrictions were imposed after the protesters launched a non-cooperation movement and blocked transport routes into Dhaka. Leaders of the protests have asked supporters to "prepare bamboo sticks to liberate Bangladesh". Protesters are demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation. Clashes have occurred between pro-government supporters and anti-government protesters.
Police have reported street battles in multiple cities, with protesters setting cars, motorcycles, and a hospital on fire. The ruling Awami League has urged its supporters to gather to show support. Meanwhile, former military officers have backed the student-led movement. The protests have now evolved beyond the initial issue of job quotas, with demonstrators seeking the "next generation to live freely in the country". The July unrest against quotas in government jobs resulted in over 200 deaths.
