Archaeologists Open 2,000-Year-Old Sarcophagus in Italy's Tomb of Cerberus

Archaeologists revealed a shrouded skeleton in Italy's ancient Roman Tomb of Cerberus. Initially, a non-invasive examination using a micro-camera was conducted through a small opening, revealing a well-preserved burial. The skeleton was found lying flat on its back, covered by a shroud, likely mineralized due to the particular climatic conditions within the funerary chamber.
The tomb, named after a fresco of Cerberus, the mythical three-headed dog guarding the underworld, was discovered in 2023 in Giugliano, a suburb of Naples, but it wasn’t until now, that archaeologists decided to open one of the two sarcophagi found inside.
