Most umbrellas these days are of the cheaply made folding variety. Traditional wooden brollies like this are increasingly hard to find unless you are prepared to pay a premium price. Priced at just £29.29 before discounts on Amazon this brolly from NINEMAX harks back to an earlier age but for a contemporary budget price.

The 118 cm diameter 650G umbrella arrived in a huge Amazon shipping box within which was the brolly itself protected by a custom fit plastic bag. A combined cover and carry strap was included although no paperwork, branded box or other items were in the shipping box. My brolly is blue but I believe it is also available in Burgundy.

The umbrella is has a traditional hardwood J handle and metal ferrule, although I am not sure what type of wood has been used, together with a very modern 16 rib reinforced lightweight fibreglass frame. It is covered with high-density 190T Impact cloth fabric, which I have never heard of but which I am told is designed to be both water repellent and quick drying. The water just beads and flows off the skin rather than soaking through as happens with old style fabrics. Build quality seems excellent with nothing looking likely to break or fail anytime soon.

With 16 fibreglass ribs and an aluminium shaft this brolly is designed for heavy duty use and is both wind and water resistant and the large size should make it useful on photographic shoots as well as for personal protection for up to twom people from rain and snow.

The brolly has a single quick release button to unfurl with a simple pull and click to close and lock. There was no struggle to engage the return lock as I have found with other bollies. A retaining strap holds the brolly tightly closed when furled.

If you need a traditional stockbroker style large umbrella made to modern high standards then this might be for you. All you will need next will be a bowler hat.
