James 2:1 warns his brethren that they have not the faith of Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect for persons. He explains that this sin has corrupted and divided Christians, and warns against it. The apostle calls Jesus the Lord of glory, as he is the brightness and express image of God. He encourages Christians to respect Christians for their relation and conformity to Christ, and not make too much of men's outward appearance the measure of their respect. The assembly in the text is meant for meetings appointed for deciding matters among the members of the church, and the rich and poor should sit or stand together. The apostle emphasizes that in professing the faith of Jesus Christ, we should not show respect to men, as this can turn into sin. He warns against being partial in ourselves and becoming judges of evil thoughts.
