16
Our first mystery takes us back to the Paleolithic era with the discovery of the Venus of Willendorf. This small, 11-centimeter-tall figurine, carved from limestone and estimated to be around 25,000 years old, was found in 1908 near the town of Willendorf. The Venus of Willendorf is one of the oldest and most famous prehistoric art pieces, depicting a voluptuous female figure. But who created this figurine, and what was its purpose? Was it a fertility idol, a goddess, or a representation of an idealized form? The true meaning and origin of the Venus of Willendorf remain an enigma, sparking countless theories and debates.
