Enki, the firstborn son of Anu, laments the devastating effects of a great calamity that has befallen the land of Shumer (Sumer). This disaster, known as the Evil Wind, has destroyed cities, fields, rivers, and the lives of people and animals. The once flourishing land is now barren and lifeless, with temples abandoned and the gods fleeing their cities. The Evil Wind, a poisonous storm, was not a natural destiny but a result of a conflict among the gods.

The conflict arose due to a struggle for power, particularly involving Marduk, Enki’s firstborn. Enki recounts how in the council of the gods, decisions were made that led to the unleashing of weapons of terror. These decisions, driven by vengeance and rivalry, resulted in a catastrophic wind that brought death and destruction. Despite Enki’s pleas for peace, the gods, particularly Enlil’s sons Ninurta and Nergal, insisted on using these deadly weapons.

The storm, born in the west and moving eastward, left Shumer desolate. The once vibrant cities and fertile lands were reduced to ruins, with the gods powerless to stop the destruction. Enki reflects on the sorrow and helplessness felt by the gods and the irreversible consequences of their actions.
