Small Talk:
A Poem

Small talk always seemed so…small;
Like we were below goodies put away for later.
Leerin’ at depth in a cookie jar atop the fridge,
I never wanted us to grow, I wanted us to be born tall.

Small talk always seemed so…boring;
Like a stamp-collecting-grandpa’s quiet study.
Watching glue dry beneath historic events,
I never wanted us adhering, I wanted exploring.

Small talk always seemed so…shallow;
Like swimming a stream to spite the ocean.
Dreamin’ of Moby Dicks instead of fishing salmon,
I never wanted frivolity, I wanted gallows.

…But just as you walked before you ran,
You crawled before you stood.
Meet your neighbor where he began,
And discern what on earth is good.
