In this heartfelt interview, the origins and evolution of the Harriet Shields Child Care Center and its association with Ella Fitzgerald are discussed. The center was founded in response to the Watts riots, initiated by a group of women from Beverly Hills and Bel Air aiming to support women in South Central Los Angeles. They established the childcare center to provide a safe space for children while their mothers pursued work or education. Ella Fitzgerald played a significant role in fundraising for the center and personally contributed to the children and their families during holidays. The center's success led to the opening of a second location, named after Fitzgerald, continuing her legacy of support and care. Despite facing potential financial challenges, the center remains committed to serving the community, inspired by Fitzgerald's generous and caring spirit.
