Sunderland riot targets mosque in major disturbance
An overturned car was set on fire in Sunderland city centre as disorder continued on Friday evening.
Police in protective gear came under sustained attack as rioters set off fire extinguishers towards them on High West Street. It is less than a mile from the mosque where police also came under attack.
The protest was among several planned across the UK this weekend after the knife attack in Southport on Monday, fuelled by misinformation on social media about the background and religion of the 17-year-old suspect.
