Will it will again? What are the odds? Joaquin Phoenix returns as Arthur, along with Zazie Beetz. The full cast includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, & Harry Lawtey. A new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux has been released, teasing what is coming up in the DC sequel featuring Joaquin Phoenix once again as the iconic Batman villain. While 2024 has very few upcoming DC movies in store, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios are revisiting the Joker universe following the major 2019 box office and the critical success of Phillips' Joker movie. Featuring Phoenix back in the role of Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. the Clown Prince of Crime, Joker: Folie à Deux will be focusing on his adventures with Harley Quinn, with Lady Gaga joining the Elseworlds-franchise.

As Joker: Folie à Deux will be released this fall in theaters, the marketing campaign is going deeper for the Phoenix and Lady Gaga-starring musical movie. On Monday, July 22, Warner Bros. Pictures launched a countdown Joker: Folie à Deux stream, announcing that the next trailer would be released on Tuesday, July 23. Although Joker: Folie à Deux is set in Todd Phillips' standalone DC Elseworlds universe, it could feature a few cameos by Gotham heroes and villains.

What Joker: Foile Á Deux's New Trailer Reveals About The DC Sequel's Story
One of the big highlights of the new trailer is that it shows how Arthur's trial will be a crucial part of the Joker: Folie à Deux plot. Following rumors that the character would be making his Elseworlds debut in the Joker universe, the new footage also confirms that the iconic Batman villain Harvey Dent will be introduced in this film. With captions turned on for the Joker: Folie à Deux trailer, Harvey is the one listed as the third voice that is talking off-screen while saying, "They believe Arthur Fleck to be some kind of martyr. Well, he's not."

The Joker: Folie à Deux trailer highlights more of Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn as well, with the story exploring how she believes she has found a kindred spirit in Arthur Fleck. As Fleck begins to become a bigger symbol in Gotham City, it is clear that Harley will be instrumental in him finding more of his courage, as citizens begin to fight for him. Based on the latest tidbits learned about her from the trailer, Joker: Folie à Deux is taking a lot of creative liberties with Harley's comic roots.

Time will tell how much more Warner Bros. Pictures will unveil of Joker: Folie à Deux, as there are now only three months left to go before the film's release. While Joker: Folie à Deux will be showcased at the Venice Film Festival, it wouldn't be shocking if there is another trailer released ahead of its October release. But with everything that has been revealed about Joker: Folie à Deux thus far, the DC sequel is looking very promising.

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are causing chaos as Joker and Harley Quinn in the latest trailer for Warner Bros. and DC‘s “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the sequel to 2019’s “Joker.” The film is set to release in theaters on Oct. 4, 2024 after world premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where the first movie won the Golden Lion in 2019.

Both a critical and commercial success, the first “Joker” was nominated for 11 Oscars, with star Joaquin Phoenix winning best actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir for original score. It became the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. The sequel will have Phoenix reprise his role, accompanied by Gaga’s Harley Quinn, as the two embark on sinister adventures. The film will reportedly take place mostly in Arkham Asylum.

Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey comprise the supporting cast of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” with Zazie Beetz returning as Sophie from the original. The sequel is said to be a musical, expanding on Phoenix’s manic dancing from the first movie.

Popular on Variety
Addressing the movie’s musical components, Beetz told Variety: “I think people will be surprised. I don’t think it’s going to be what they expect, around it being musical. We all sort of express musically and dancing in our lives day-to-day. I think it’s going to work really well.”

“Joker: Folie à Deux” will be separate from the other upcoming films from DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran’s slate, like “Superman,” and exist in its own separate world. The same goes for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II,” which tells its own standalone story. Gaga’s Harley Quinn will exist separately from Margot Robbie’s character, seen in “Birds of Prey” and “The Suicide Squad,” and Kaley Cuoco’s animated character from the Max series.

Todd Phillips returns as director of “Joker: Folie à Deux.” He co-wrote the script with Scott Silver and produced the film with Bradley Cooper.

Who is in the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux?
Joaquin Phoenix will be reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, AKA The Joker. And of course, superstar Lady Gaga is taking on the role of Harley Quinn. What a pairing.

Photos of Gaga looking absolutely incredible as the iconic character went viral in March 2022 and we are so excited!

Also starring is Zazie Beetz, who appeared in the first film as Arthur's neighbour Sophie, with whom he imagines a relationship. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Harry Lawtey, and Jacob Lofland will also be appearing.

What's the Joker sequel about?
It was uncertain whether this dark drama would even be granted a sequel, given the slight controversies that surrounded its release (some audiences questioned the moral implications of celebrating violence in such a way.) Though, with a $1 billion return at the box office, it was inevitable.

Major plot details are still under wraps, but a few things have come to light. The film is said to be taking place mostly in Arkham Asylum, and will be... wait for it... a musical.

Yes, you read that right! Though it's unclear to what extent the musical elements will lead the film's narrative, this twist in format has certainly thrown all expectations out of the water.

The title itself, Folie à Deux, is a French phrase which means "delusion or mental illness shared by two people in close association". This suggests that The Joker will be finding a partnership in madness with another character, and given that the film will take place in Arkham Asylum (the setting in which he canonically meets his beloved Dr Harleen Quinzel), we can't help but think that maybe Harley Quinn might be stopping by.

According to reports, the film will have "complicated musical sequences", and will work on a budget of roughly $150 million. Sounds pretty unmissable.

What is the release date for Joker: Folie à Deux?
Five years on from the first film, we can't wait any longer for the sequel.

Now, we don't have to as Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released in cinemas on 4th October, 2024.
