In this short presentation, Matt introduces Plato's Philebus dialogue and the historical roots of the false dichotomy shaped by the hedonists vs the utilitarian schools of thought. The purpose of Plato's lesser known dialogue (on how to judge the Good) resolves this dispute using an insight that was discovered by Cicero (who rejected both Epicureans and Stoics alike) as well as Benjamin Franklin who set the stage for the American revolution.
