Through electronic intercepts, intelligence staff for Chernarus 3rd Separate Tank Brigade discovered that the separatists were planning to occupy the village of Rassvet in Northwest Chernarus from the march. Rassvet lies only four km north of the forward Zone of 2nd Battalion, Chernarus 3rd Separate Tank Brigade. Brigade operations staff issued a warning order for 2nd Battalion to assemble an armored task force with the task of intercepting the separatists.

As they approached the village from the south, the task force encountered Wagner Group operators and Russian interior ministry special forces troops defending. Additionally, the lead tanks of the task force encountered and destroyed enemy light technicals.

The tactical plan for defense of the village from the oncoming attack was for 2nd Squad to occupy a light Woods to the east, while Command Squad occupied the northern edge of the village. Tank 1 guarded the western flank, while Tank 2 and Tank 3 guarded the east. The two BRDM Scout cars kept to the south of the village, the better to intercept enemy infiltrators.

2nd Squad and Command Squad were both attacked from the north and the northeast by Serbian regulars. With rifle counterfire and fire from vehicles, those attacks were driven back. In the meantime, Tank 2 and Tank 3 fought off numerous attempts by the separatists to attack with heavy armor, including attacks from T-72 and T-64 tanks.

Serb regulars and Wagner Group operators attacked the positions of Command Squad. That attack was stopped with combined fire from rifles and vehicle weapons.

A separate Serb attack fell on 2nd Squad and Tank 3, then a second attack took place against 2nd Squad. Both attacks were stopped. All the while, more heavy and light armor attempted to take over the village, but were stopped by long range antitank gunfire from Tank 2 and Tank 3 at distances of up to 1,500 meters. From his vantage point, commander witnessed numerous plumes of smoke emanating from the positions of tanks and light armor which attempted to approach the village, but were stopped and destroyed by tank gunfire.

When operations staff from the 2nd Battalion commander ordered the task force to pull back with the task complete, the retreat was conducted in good order.

Casualties were light. Command Squad lost two. 2nd Squad lost one.

Field counts of enemy losses included three T-55 tanks, two BRDM scout cars, two technicals, one T-72 tank, one T-64 tank, and one UAV.

In compiling the reports from the engagement, 2nd Battalion intelligence staff was shocked to learn that the separatists had increased their stocks of heavy tanks and were not timid in using them in attack operations against fixed positions. This suggested that the separatists were planning major operations in Northwestern Chernarus, and would not give up with this single defeat.
