Actually, you do. Its called negotiation. The amount of wages you can bargain for depends on the value of your labour. And it increases with the amount of skills you accumulate, as well as your bargaining power over the employer. Now, if your job involves basic skills that most people can do, you will have less control of your wages. But if your skill is rare but still useful to the employer, such as advanced knowledge of mathematics or programming, then you can bargain for much higher wages. So the wage variable isn’t immutable.
