It was the biggest challenge to Venezuela's left-wing populists, the Chavistas, in 25 years. The country's notoriously fractured opposition joined forces defied attempts of intimidation and sought to bring down Nicolas Maduro – the man who presided over a crippling economic downfall and one of the world's biggest displacement crises.

The opposition was predicted to win by a double-digit margin and yet the incumbent has been declared the winner. Democratic leaders and organizations from around the world are calling the result into question, as is the opposition. They claim the vote was rigged by an Electoral Council run by Maduro loyalists.
