New York AG Letitia James' Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has released its report on the death of Joshua De'Miguel Kavota, who died on June 29, 2022, in Franklin County. After reviewing body cam footage, 911 calls, and witness interviews, OSI concluded that the Saranac Lake Police Department officer who shot Mr. Kavota was justified.
On June 29, 2022, SLPD officers responded to a stabbing on Bloomingdale Avenue. Mr. Kavota, armed with a knife, charged at an officer. The officer fell, and another officer shot Mr. Kavota. Despite first aid efforts, Mr. Kavota died at the hospital. The knife was recovered at the scene. Under New York law, the officer's actions were deemed justified, and no charges will be filed.
