How did we get to the point where life was better under jim crow than now?

Fewer black people were killed during the Jim Crow era than today, black families stayed together and had generational wealth and success. Now they live in ghettos and on a single weekend more blacks are killed by other blacks than the amount of people killed in the entire Jim Crow era. How did we allow things to get so bad?
