天竺葵幼株為肉質草本，老株半木質化；葉對生，葉片圓形，腎形或扇形。
花色有白、紅、紫、粉紅、橙、甚至近似黑色等，為傘形花序，四季都能開花，以春季最盛。
天竺葵每朵花具五瓣，花聚集成傘狀，稱為「假傘狀花序」，花的形狀從星狀到漏斗狀有各種形狀。
