French fans boo Joel Embiid during Team USA's win over Serbia

Joel Embiid's choice not to represent France, despite receiving naturalized citizenship there in 2022, has stirred discussions. Although he’s never resided in France, some French fans had hoped he would join forces with NBA stars Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert for the upcoming Paris Games.

Embiid also had the possibility of playing for Cameroon, but the team did not advance far enough in the qualification rounds. This left him with the U.S. as an option, where he also obtained citizenship in 2022.

Previously, Embiid expressed a desire to play for Team USA because his son was born in the United States. However, he has not explicitly stated why he preferred the U.S. over France.

In a recent game, Embiid contributed four points, one block, and two rebounds in Team USA's 110-84 win against Serbia.
